Have you ever felt like something in your life was off, even if everything seemed fine on the surface? Maybe you achieved a goal, but it didn’t bring the fulfillment you expected. Or maybe you made a decision that looked right from the outside, but deep down, it didn’t sit well with you.

Often, this discomfort comes from a misalignment between our actions and our core values. When we’re clear on what truly matters to us, decisions become easier, and life feels more intentional. But how often do we stop to ask ourselves: What are my core values? And am I truly living by them?

What are core values, and why do they matter?
Core values are the principles that guide us, shaping how we think, act, and make decisions. They are the foundation of who we are—not what society expects of us, not what we’ve been told we "should" value, but what genuinely resonates with our inner truth.

When we live in alignment with our values, we experience clarity, purpose, and a sense of authenticity. When we don’t, we feel disconnected from ourselves, as if we’re living someone else’s life.

Take a moment to reflect: Have you ever made a decision that didn’t align with your values? How did it feel?

How to identify your core values
Many of us assume we already know our values, but when asked to name them, we hesitate. To clarify them, try this simple exercise:

  1. Think of a time when you felt truly fulfilled—what was happening? What values were being honored in that moment?

  2. Think of a time when you felt frustrated or out of alignment—what value might have been missing?

  3. Look at the choices you make daily—do they reflect what matters most to you?

Your core values might include things like integrity, growth, connection, freedom, creativity, or service. The key is not just identifying them but using them as a compass for your life.

Living in alignment with your values
Once you know your values, the next step is to integrate them into your daily life. This doesn’t mean making drastic changes overnight, but rather small, conscious choices that reflect what you stand for.

If one of your core values is authenticity, ask yourself: Am I showing up as my true self in my work, relationships, and personal growth?

If growth is a key value, consider: Am I putting myself in situations that challenge and expand me, or am I staying in my comfort zone?

When we consistently act in alignment with our values, life feels more meaningful. We make decisions with confidence, navigate challenges with clarity, and experience deeper fulfillment.

Navigating conflicts between values
Sometimes, our values can seem to be in conflict—like when we value both stability and adventure, or independence and connection. The key is not to choose one over the other but to find balance.

Instead of seeing values as rigid rules, think of them as guiding principles that can adapt to different situations. Ask yourself: How can I honor both of these values in a way that feels right for me?

Living by your values isn’t about perfection—it’s about awareness. The more you align your actions with what truly matters to you, the more grounded and fulfilled you’ll feel.

So, I ask you: What are the values that guide your life? And what’s one small action you can take today to live in greater alignment with them?
